A day in the life of…. a Digital and Social Media Manager.

Sheena, a fully-remote and flexible VentureWeb Associate, tells us why she loves having more time to focus and the flexibility to work from anywhere. Join us as we delve into a day in Sheena’s life as a Digital and Social Media Marketing Manager.
  1. What is it that you do, in a nutshell?
    I’m responsible for project managing the digital and social media initiatives for a leading global cybersecurity service. This entails briefing in and reviewing webpages, social media campaigns, copy and artwork creation, as well as providing final approvals once sign-offs are obtained. I guess you could say I help hold projects together and ensure things are moving forward as and when they should be.
  2. How do you get your day started? What do mornings look like for you?
    Once I’ve dropped my child off at school for the day, I move to my home office for a quick breakfast and cup of coffee while my inbox floods with emails from the night before. After working through them, and with the help of a few more cups of coffee, I put together my daily to-do list in order of priority.
  3. What does your workspace look like/consist of?
    I work from my home office, looking onto our pool area to my left and our garden on my right. I consider my desk my sanctuary and because I essentially work alone, I can play my cheesy 80’s music, burn my scented candles and walk around barefoot to my heart’s content. On challenging days, I make sure the windows are open so I can hear the birds chirping. The sound reminds me of why I chose this environment, it’s the best one for me as a mom who needs work/life flexibility.
  4. How do you manage to stay motivated in your work day, given that you work remotely with no face time with your teammates & stakeholders?
    I regularly have face time with colleagues on Skype for Business, and our team has taken to doing video calls weekly, bringing us all closer to one another. It’s amazing the difference seeing someone’s face makes when they’re talking. All pre-conceived perceptions fly out the window and humanity enters the picture. Suddenly it’s not just a task-driving voice on the other end of the call, but an actual person expressing goals and jokes of their own.
  5. What would you say consistently takes up the most time in your work day?
    To help business run globally, a significant part of my day is spent drafting handover emails or updating status documents, so the next person, a colleague in another time zone, can easily jump on the project and know exactly where it stands without having to rely on a daily phone call. The rest is spent getting the work done before handing it over at the end of my day.
  6. Does this work suit your life? If so, why – what do you enjoy the most.
    Yes, it does. Not only do I not have to put up with a colleague’s smelly fish in the microwave, I have fewer interruptions, more time to focus and the flexibility to work from home or remotely. All I need is my trusty laptop and a decent internet connection. This lifestyle suits me best, I could never go back to an office sharing environment.
